Local officials were scheduled to gather in San Francisco’s Noe Valley Town Square on Wednesday to celebrate their latest win: a single public restroom that will cost $1.7 million to build and is not expected to be completed until 2025.

But the celebration was canceled after a San Francisco Chronicle columnist highlighted the “overwhelming” and “frantic” details of the project.

California Rep. Matt Haney told the newspaper that he now sees the award as “inexplicable.”

“When Rec and Park first told us the number, it sounded surprisingly high to me,” Haney told the San Francisco Chronicle.

“I’m glad Noe Valley is getting a bathroom eventually, but it shouldn’t be that expensive and it shouldn’t take that long and I’m furious about that. … It’s not something I want to celebrate at the moment.”

A spokesman for the San Francisco Department of Recreation and Parks told Fox News Digital that the exorbitantly high costs were due to “heavy demands and unforeseen costs from PG&E,” construction costs that have increased by 20% to 30% over the past two years shot up. Hiring workers who receive a living wage along with benefits.

“It is also important to note that estimates of public projects and their total costs do not simply reflect the price of building structures,” the spokesman said. “Includes design, drawing, permits, inspections, public access and construction management costs.”

According to the parks department, when the restroom is actually completed in 2025, the cost could be below the $1.7 million price tag. At this point, the remaining funds will be spent on maintenance and improvements.
