Where does the name “Mai Tai” come from?
In the Tahitian language, the adjective maita’i means “good”. However, this tiki cocktail was not created in Polynesia, but in the USA. The drink was born in a bar in California in 1944 when Victor Bergeron served it to two Tahitian friends. They were blown away and shouted Maita’i roa ae!, which means something like “The best!” or “Out of this world!”
