Vettel: F1 could disappear in ten years
Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel says F1 is at risk of extinction within ten years.
The Aston Martin driver told the newspaper Tages-Anzeiger that F1’s technical rules and race schedule are not “fast and development-oriented” enough, socially and environmentally.
“Financial interests should not be a priority when preparing the calendar,” Vettel said.
“We shouldn’t be flying east to west or north to south. We should go wherever is closest. Banning plastic in the stands and paddock can also make a big difference.”
“Of course, none of them will save the world, but if Formula 1 does not adapt to these environmental developments and problems, even if the audience increases, it may be left behind or even disappear in the next ten years.” said.
The German driver stated that F1 has made changes since 2007, but they are not enough.
“Time passes, but it’s like it’s stopped in Formula 1.”
“Our sport is fast and development driven in many ways, such as technology and innovation. But we don’t really lead when it comes to ideas.”
Some say Vettel only recently “opened his eyes” to environmental and social issues, but he insisted that rewards weren’t the only thing he cared about before.
“I didn’t have to switch teams to understand that.”
“I think I just got older. When you become a father, your perspective and ideas change. You take responsibility and you grow. Also, I’m curious about nature and open to different things.”
“Change is mostly perceived as fear and something good will be lost, so I realize that people in Formula 1 don’t always see change as an opportunity for the future.”
“Formula 1 always wants to look like a place that is open to communication from the outside. But to be honest, I want to find that courage inside.”
