What’s the latest on TikTok? Should TikTok be banned or not? Here are TikTok bans and discussions:
TikTok has been a topic of discussion both in the US and in certain countries for a while. In Turkey, which is one of these countries, some people want this popular practice to be banned or restricted. The USA, on the other hand, is taking steps in this regard. So what’s the latest? Should TikTok be banned or not? Here are TikTok bans and discussions:
TikTok bans debate from the USA and Turkey
The first serious step towards TikTok came from the USA. In order to prevent spying in government institutions, it was decided to delete TikTok from their work phones. This is not based on TikTok, but rather on the “espionage” allegations made by the US against China-based companies.
In addition, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo thinks that amid tensions with China, a number of Chinese-owned apps, including popular social media platform TikTok, should be banned due to national security concerns.
According to the result of a survey conducted in Yahoo News on the subject, 62 percent of the respondents think that TikTok should be banned in the USA.
The New York Times published an in-depth study on the subject. Although the basis of TikTok bans is surveillance and espionage, the fact is that TikTok belongs to ByteDance, a China-based company, and therefore this application is not reliable in the ownership of “unreliable” China. While this is the case, the banning of TikTok, the world’s most popular application, has started to come up frequently: Should TikTok be banned or not?
There is no clear answer to this, because even though it is banned, these accusations against the practices of China-based companies will continue because “China” is not found to be reliable. The NYT offers a suggestion: Transparency. It is emphasized that if the mobile applications take steps within the transparency policy, whether they are reliable or not, things will go well.
TikTok spokesperson Jamie Favazza, in a statement he made at the time of TikTok bans, says that the general manager of the company and the person responsible for information security is American, and emphasizes that since the beginning of 2020, the number of employees in the USA has tripled. In addition, it is said that the data of American users of TikTok is stored in Virginia and Singapore, so it is stated that there will be no leakage.
Of course, though, TikTok still seems to be in a pending state for the US. Let’s come to Turkey. There are millions of active TikTok users in Turkey and this number is increasing day by day.
For this reason, some problems due to the application become more visible. One of them came to the fore with an incident that took place in the past few days. A 5-year-old boy who took a TikTok video lost the lens in his right eye as a result of an accident.
After the event, which became the subject of discussion, TikTok bans came to the fore. In addition to those who argue that there should be an age limit, there are also those who argue that some restrictions should be introduced and even those who think that the application should be closed.
Should TikTok be banned if a child is harmed by the application in our country, where the new social media regulation remains on the agenda? It raised the question. Although there is no ban or restriction on the application in Turkey for the moment, social media is divided into two, so in your opinion, should TikTok be banned or not?
