Follow these 8 tips and your mattress could last a lot longer, Good care for your bed

It is often recommended that you replace your mattress every eight to ten years. It’s no wonder, because we spend around 3000 hours in our beds every year, so our mattresses take quite a beating. And of course you have to take good care of it, otherwise it may start to smell or become a little uncomfortable. With these eight tips, your mattress will last much longer.

Mattresses are quite expensive, so you want to get the most out of them.

1. Turn around

Back then, you had to turn the mattress quite often because of the inner springs, but nowadays there aren’t that big springs in mattresses anymore. However, we recommend turning your mattress over once a month to keep it from sagging and forming a valley.

2. Mattress topper

A good mattress topper is pretty cheap and easy to wash, which is handy because you can’t put your entire mattress in the washing machine, can you? A mattress pad catches all the moisture, dust, and oils so you don’t get stains on the actual mattress. Remember those creaky, plastic-like covers from back in the day? They were really uncomfortable but don’t worry, there are many different types of cushions and covers available these days so you’re quite likely to find one that suits you personally.

3. Standing on the bed

Have you ever scolded your children for not jumping around on the beds? You are right to do so, because this can damage both the wooden slats and the mattress itself. But even if you don’t have children, you may sometimes make the mistake of standing on your bed, e.g. B. to reach a shelf. The local pressure of your body weight can already be enough to cause a large sag in the mattress or even break the wooden slats.

4. Pets

Yes, sleeping in bed with your dog or cat might be cute, but it’s not good for the mattress. Pets’ hair and dander get dirty all the more quickly and they can (accidentally) make small tears in the mattress with their sharp claws or even break them completely.

5. Clean

It may not be the nicest task, but it is necessary: cleaning the mattress. You should do this at least twice a year! Strip off all linens and vacuum the mattress thoroughly to get rid of all dust and hair. Pay particular attention to the edges and seams, as this is where a lot of dirt and dust mites accumulate. Then sprinkle a little baking soda on the mattress and let it sit for a few minutes before vacuuming it off again. Everything smells nice and fresh again. 6. Support

The biggest reason for a sagging mattress is incorrect or broken slats. That’s why you should always check whether the mattress is still intact every time you turn it over (see tip 1). If the mattress isn’t adequately supported, it will sag a lot, which can lead to neck and back problems.

7. Airing

Another important part of mattress care is airing. When you wash your bed linen, it is best to let the mattress air out a bit. To do this, pull all the sheets off the bed and leave the mattress bare for the rest of the day to air out.

8. Spots

Unfortunately, that happened quickly: Your child had a small “accident” by drinking in bed and spilling something or suffering from physical complaints such as gastroenteritis. Here it is very important to treat the stains as soon as possible: remove the bed sheet and blot up the moisture with a towel. Then use a detergent or baking soda to remove the stain and odors. Then let the mattress dry thoroughly before using a fresh sheet. If you are in a hurry, you can also use a hair dryer. If left untreated, the stain will likely become impossible to remove once it dries.
