Do you always sit with your legs crossed?

A real lady always sits with her legs crossed, at least that’s what we’re always told. And if you’re wearing a dress or skirt and don’t want everyone to see what’s underneath, this sitting position is also pretty useful. However, the next time you cross your legs, you might want to think twice about whether you really want it or not. Because apparently it carries a pretty big risk.

It turns out that sitting cross-legged for long periods of time is not good for you. Crossing one leg over the other can cause the foot or leg to go numb after a while due to pressure on a particular nerve behind the knee. Crossing your legs is also said to increase blood pressure. Because crossing your legs pushes blood to the heart. And that sounds like something other than being healthy, right? This sitting position inhibits blood circulation, so even people at high risk of blood clots are advised not to cross their legs.

And not only that, crossed legs can also often lead to varicose veins. Pressure on the legs stretches the soft structure of the vein and can lead to the feared varicose veins. There’s no need to worry if you just sit cross-legged for a minute or two, but if you do it regularly and for more than 10 to 15 minutes at a time, the risk increases significantly.

Crossed legs are also not very good for your posture and can cause serious hip and back pain. It’s important to get up every 30 minutes and take a small walk—perhaps to the bathroom and back. This position isn’t ideal for men either, as their privacy can be trapped and can affect the production of some baby makers. It is best to sit upright with your feet flat on the floor and your shoulders back.
