5 reasons why some dogs are particularly difficult to adopt

Many rescue dogs desperately want a loving home and often have to wait years before they are adopted. Some of them have a particularly difficult time getting adopted in the first place. These are the most common reasons.

There are dogs that quickly find a new home because they look particularly cute or belong to a particularly popular dog breed.

However, some dogs are not so lucky and often have to wait years before they find a home. In Germany, around 80,000 dogs come to an animal shelter every year. Of these animals, only about three quarters get the chance to be adopted within a year.

Why some dogs are difficult to adopt

Dogs that have a particularly difficult time being adopted are often old or handicapped. But not only physical abnormalities make adoption difficult. What many don’t know is that black, large dogs tend to be adopted less often than dogs with a different coat color.

Old dogs difficult to adopt

Older dogs are less likely to be adopted and therefore have a new home. Many people prefer a puppy or a very young and active dog.

However, there are many advantages to adopting an older dog. Iris Irmscher, who volunteers at the animal protection association “Fellnasen Stuttgart e.V.”, says: “Especially the old dogs are actually “cool” and relaxed. They fit in well with their new family and often no longer need any special training.”

Especially during the corona pandemic, many older dogs were adopted. If you are taking in an older dog, it is best to have experience with dogs and to take the dog to the vet regularly.

Handicapped dogs

Animals that have a handicap (physical or psychological) often have a very difficult time being adopted. They may be paralyzed, blind, or have to make do with just three legs.

Therefore, potential dog owners often opt for a healthy dog, because why should you get a dog with a handicap when there are also animals without handicaps? A handicap is often associated with many visits to the vet and a lot of time.

Nevertheless, even such dogs can lead a largely normal life. All you need is patience, understanding and a loving attitude.

Traumatized and behavioral dogs

There are dogs that show behavioral problems due to traumatic events in the past. This is also one of the reasons why many potential dog owners decide against an animal from an animal shelter. It takes a lot of patience to bond and gain the animal’s trust.

People who still decide to give a dog with behavioral patterns a chance need a lot of understanding and willingness to work with the dog. They must also be able to engage in the behavior.
When these aspects are met, after a period of time, a different dog may emerge: a dog that is trusting, happy, and grateful.

Listed dogs: Difficult to place

List dogs are dogs that are classified as dangerous because of their breed. They are also often referred to as “fighting dogs”. This term is no coincidence, as breeds so named actually had to participate in dog fights. Dog fighting is now banned in the EU.

Each federal state determines which animals are considered list dogs. The American Staffordshire Bull Terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier are among the primary breeds. Therefore, adopting and keeping such dogs is difficult.

On the one hand, they are not allowed to be adopted privately and, on the other hand, listed dogs that are handed over to animal shelters often come from a problematic attitude. Therefore, they need owners who know their stuff and can properly train the animal.

Bad luck for black dogs

Last but not least, adopting black dogs is also difficult. Dogs that have black fur and are also very large have a particularly difficult time being adopted.

Black dogs are often automatically associated with something negative and seen as dangerous.

But the coat color has nothing to do with behavior and character. Therefore, this myth should not be seen as a decisive point against adopting a dog, but should be a first step, with research and contact to animal welfare organizations and animal shelters, to also consider a dog with black fur.
